Despite Competition, Windows Phone Continues to Grow

Apple Inc., the most preferred smartphone brand for luxury class is facing severe competition from Google’s open source operating system – Android over price and features. However, Microsoft Windows Phone is growing its base day by day amongst the smartphone users, showing a ray of hope for the Windows Phone Application DevelopmentCompanies. By proving the users the much required features and ‘look & feel’ in their mobile device and that also in a cost effective manner, Windows Phone has made it clear that it is here to stay.

Apple Inc. revealed a new iPhone device and a new operating system in September 2013 to compete against all its competitors over features as well as the pricing strategy. Android, on the other hand, is being used by many mobile phone development companies and thus, market witnesses one or the other new Android phone every now and then. But, things have been different for Window’s Phone. It has witnessed those times when very few mobile application development companies were developing apps for Windows Phone as the demand was very low. However, Microsoft has been confident of its success and this confidant stand paid as well. Microsoft Windows Phone witnessed a growth of 78% in the second quarter of 2013.

According to a recent survey by IDC, Windows Phone has shown a consistent growth year over year as compared to other smartphone brands. Following is the comparative analysis of the Smartphone market Share in the 2nd quarter of Year 2012 and 2013:

A similar survey of the Worldwide Smartphone Shipment was done by IDC. Following is the finding of the same:

All the statistics shown above proves that despite a severe competition in the smartphone market, Windows Phone has a bright opportunity of capturing a much bigger user base that it already has; especially after the acquisition of the top most handset manufacturer, Nokia.

On 3rd September, 2013, BBC Business news flashed that “Microsoft has agreed a deal to buy Nokia's mobile phone business for 5.4 billion euros ($7.2bn; £4.6bn) and that Nokia will also license its patents and mapping services to Microsoft. The purchase is set to be completed in early 2014, when about 32,000 Nokia employees will transfer to Microsoft.”

Now that Microsoft has acquired that smartphone device which was using its operating system as the primary OS – Nokia, chances are great that Microsoft will wipe out the competition from the market by proving a smartphone that will be feature rich as well as highly affordable.

This news is also a good news for Windows Phone Application Development Companies as they are now planning to conceptualize new and innovative apps for Windows Phone users. The acquisition of Nokia handset device unit by Microsoft is a win-win situation for both the companies as well as for the users. It certainly will raise the demand of Windows Phone and with it, the demand for compatible applications will rise like never before.

Apple vs Android

Is Apple more Innovative than Android?

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Android has a lion’s share in the worldwide smartphone market. If compared to the users of iOS. However, if we consider the statue of the latest version of these operating systems, we will get to see that not many of Android users have migrated to the latest and updated version of Android platform but, as much as 90 percent of the iOS users have already migrated to the latest iOS version and the trend of migration from an older version to the newer is constant.

According to a blog posted at Market Land, the latest and updated version of iOS is witnessing more migration than the latest Android OS. Many users of Android OS are still using the previous version of Android OS – Gingerbread, instead of moving on to the latest version Jelly Bean. At the same time, the latest version of Apple’s Operating System – iOS 6 has users more than its previous versions. This clearly means that people look forward to migrate from the earlier iOS version to the latest one as it always has something new to offer and at the same time restores all the facilities that the older version was offering.

To make it more precise, we may refer the following pie chart:

Version of iOS running on the iPhone

The diagram above shows all the versions of iOS that are running on the iPhone in recent times and the percentage of iPhones on which they are installed. The Pie-Chart makes it very clear that fewer than 8 percent of iPhone owners are using the previous version of iOS and mostly have migrated to the latest version – iOS 6.

Version Of iOS running on the iPad

Not only iPhone, but the majority of iPad users prefers to migrate from an older version to the latest version. The Pie-Chart above makes it very clear that almost 83 percent of iPad users have installed iOS 6. Taken together, nearly 90 percent of iPhone and iPad users are on the latest version of the operating system.
However, if we compare these statistics with the Android OS, we will find that Android users are still stuck with the older version and have opted not to move on to the latest aversion. From this we could infer that the latest version of Android OS is lacking the functionality and features that was there in the old version and that’s what is keeping the users from migrating to the latest version.

The following Pie-Chart will clarify it more appropriately:

The statistics above are strongly suggesting the innovation of iOS platform; that the Apple Inc. keeps its promise of delivering better solution with each latest version and users like it nonetheless. Google, unlike Apple, is left behind and Android is unable to woe its users to migrate from the older version of OS to the latest version. Almost 37 percent of Android users are still using Gingerbread and have denied moving to the latest version of Android OS - Jelly Bean
